When I was 12, I entered a drawing contest for mother's day. I remember sitting at the kitchen
table drawing the contours of my mother's face as she posed without moving. I won first place and it was written about in the local newspaper.

That was me in kindergarten. The project was to draw our bodies to match the photo of our faces. Notice the dark and light green stripes of the shirt (shading) and the red laces of the hiking boots that were popular at the time. I didn't really own a pair of those shoes, I just wished I did.
